Q:  Is it okay to accept a rent check from a non-tenant, such as a friend or family member who is paying on behalf of the tenant? If so, does that give that person any rights?

A:  It could be a potential problem depending on the circumstances. If the person is an occupant of the property and not officially on the lease, a court might consider that individual a month-to-month tenant if they paid rent.
